John Kimball (born May 4, 1941) was a director on ChalkZone. A second-generation animator who worked the majority of his career with Disney, he directed several series for the company during the 1990s.
Early life[]
Kimball was the son of Ward Kimball, a famous Disney animator and one of Disney's Nine Old Men,[1] and Betty (née Lawyer), an actress who performed at the Pasadena Playhouse and was an ink and paint artist for Disney during the late 1930s.[2]
He went to Temple City High School.[3] John decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a second-generation animator.[4] Reportedly, Kimball's father had wanted John to be an architect and tried to deter him from entering the animation industry.[5]
Career[]
Kimball, early on in his career, worked at Disney as an assistant animator for several animators, including his father.[5] He was an animator for DePatie-Freleng[6] and animated sequences featuring the Loony Knight for the 1977 film Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure.[7] Kimball provided animation and graphics for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).[8]
He co-directed the Ruby-Spears series Goldie Gold and Action Jack,[9] and worked with Hanna-Barbera into the mid-1980s, directing episodes of Foofur.[10]
From the late 1980s to early 2000s, he served as an animation director for Disney,[5] including Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers,[11] Aladdin[12] and Timon and Pumbaa.[13] He co-directed the 1994 film Aladdin: The Return of Jafar.[14] Following his work on ChalkZone, Kimball retired from the animation industry.[3]
